I commented in an article about a self inflating camping air mattress. Senior citizens might prefer a camping air mattress with a built in pump. The mattress is thicker making it easier to get in and out of bed. The extra thickness also can help make the mattress firm but comfortable.
An air mattress with a built in pump inflates and deflates rapidly. They are a bit on the heavy side so they don’t work well if you plan on hiking to your destination. However, most senior citizens drive right to their site.
Let’s face it; camping can be a lot of work. Pitching your tent, inflating air mattresses, laying out your camping sleeping bags all take time. You still have to deal with food and what other toys you brought. Breaking camp is almost as much work and not near as much fun. By that time your energy level is down and normally you are going back to work. One thing you can do is get a self inflating camping air mattress.
The Chinook Rest Mattress is self inflating and is designed for rapid deflating. The deflating time is important too as no one wants to spend a lot of time breaking camp. This camping air mattress is great when you stay only one night at a site but if you stay for several days one of the other camping air mattresses might be better.
There is a certain appeal to sleeping outside and breathing fresh air. Many people comment that they sleep better with the window open than with A/C on. At one time in our history adults could sleep on the ground with perhaps a few leaves or grass to soften their bed. Sleeping in a hey loft was almost a luxury. I often have wondered they did about mosquitoes.
A camping air mattress will make an adult sleep better that on the ground and some of them are almost as good as your bed at home. The outdoor air during the day and again at night helps most people. Campers who have trouble sleeping should try and get to their site early enough to spend enough time outdoors to tire them before bedtime. It does help.
Have you ever thought about what would it take to be able to sleep outdoors in extremely cold conditions? What camping gear would you take with you to keep from freezing to death? A mummy type sleeping bag rated for the cold certainly would come to mind. I would agree that a properly rated sleeping bag is critical. What about a camping tent and camping air mattress? A camping tent might be nice but a good camping air mattress is critical.
Although a camping tent if it can be erected would help keep you warm the air mattress will help even more. The reason is the ground cold will keep the sleeper cold unless there is some insulation between the sleeper and the ground. That is more critical than a camping tent.
When the west was settled there wasn’t any need for camping air mattresses to sleep on when they were going to their destination. Those that needed something to soften the ground simply found it where they camped. I suspect they were too tired to really care. In addition most of them were fairly young and not used to the luxuries we are.
A camping air mattress is almost required for today’s camper. Don’t make the mistake of not having one for your baby. Although they do sleep anywhere if they sleep better you will enjoy it better too.
There has been many a camping trip where I sat in a chair and operated a foot pump to get our camping air mattresses inflated. That was not fun but ok if you were going to stay there a few days before breaking camp. Now I prefer the air mattresses where they have a built in pump. That makes the air mattress a lot more versatile. When the grandchildren come over we can create an extra bed and deflate it again the next day.
The drawback to these air mattresses is they are a bit on the heavy side. You really don’t want to carry them a long distance. Actually with the one we have a long distance is not that far.
