A camping air mattress isn’t the same as they were 40 some years ago. At that time you expected to blow it up using lung power and wind up on the hard ground in the morning. At least if the mattress had been used a few times. Today’s camping air mattress might even have a built in pump to inflate and deflate it’s self.
I have one with a built in pump and it doubles as an extra bed when the grandchildren come over. It only takes a few minutes to inflate so it is an issue to deflate it in the morning.
There was a time in history when grown people were able to sleep on the ground. They worked hard but were also used to primitive living. A few tree boughs gave a soft enough bed for them to sleep on. I doubt that very many people today could get a reasonable night’s sleep even after a long hike to enjoy the trip.
An air mattress from Chinook called the TrailRest takes care of that problem. It is self inflating and small enough to take on a hike or at least a canoe trip. Canoe trips can be great for remote camping since there is enough room in the canoe to carry the things you need. Just don’t tip the canoe.
