There are many camping tents to choose from but one of my favorites for the camper who wants to get to remote sites is the Stansport Orion. It is a 3 season camping tent that sleeps 4 and still is light enough to carry a long distance. The cost is low enough that even if the camper doesn’t use it for years they will get their money’s worth.
Many young people want to challenge the outdoors a few times before they start having children of their own. A smaller tent works great and they usually don’t need all the extra things older campers want. Actually if they do they won’t be carrying them a long distance to a remote site anyway.

Spring break is just around the corner and there are many young people who head to the sunny south. There are also many others who head to a friend or relatives’ house that may even be further north. After all even the northern climates have fun things to do. That is where a sleeping bag from Stansport sleeping bags or SwissGear come in. They are rectangular shaped and great for those times where the temperature is warm and you just really need a little extra bed gear.
If your son or daughter wants to take a spring break somewhere give some thought to the sleeping arrangements they will have and keep in mind that a low cost sleeping bag can save a lot. Most of the time they won’t need the expensive cold weather bags and may not want to take the extra care they deserve.

In a recent article I commented on using an inflatable boat to keep our recreation dollars under control. Inflatable kayaks also do wonders in keeping expenses low. They are easy to take to your favorite lake or river and kayak for hours. A double kayak works great if your spouse or child needs a helping hand to keep up.
The beauty of inflatable water toys is not only the fun you get but the chance to bond with those who play with you. Many corporations have team building trips designed to get people working together. This works for families too.

In the news this morning one item was the recovery was losing steam and we might be headed into another slowdown. I realize that a slowdown affects everyone differently but one thing is common for everyone affected. We need to watch our discretionary spending. It however, doesn’t mean we stop altogether unless we actually get laid off. One area we need to watch carefully is money spent on recreation.
Inflatable boats can help with keeping our costs under control. First of all the cost of an inflatable boat is low and in many areas you can take it to a public landing inflate it and use it free. The hours of fun you and your children will have will make it feel like vacation. Have fun but wear a life jacket.
Eureka has been in business for over 100 years. During that time they have learned a thing or two about what campers need and what makes a good sleeping bag. There are several Eureka sleeping bags that serve special needs. Take the Cooper River sleeping bag for example. Designed for spring or fall it is good down to 30 degrees.
Why camp in the spring or fall? Isn’t the weather a lot nicer in the summertime? You bet! But the campsites are a lot more crowded and if you want to be able to camp without the crowds spring and fall work just fine. In fact some of the best camping is in the off season. Not only can you camp without people you can camp without insects.

Have you ever arrived at your campsite late just before dark and wanted to pitch your tent in a hurry? You stepped on your plastic stake and it broke. There isn’t any discount store within 20 miles of you and now you remember that you broke a couple last time too. Ok, so you still can pitch your tent and at least get through the night or perhaps the weekend.
Having the right camping tent accessories can save a lot of issues and stress on your vacation. Take steel tent stakes for example. They won’t break and are very useful in hard rocky ground. AS the boy scouts say- be prepared.
Planning for the camping season we think in terms or what sleeping bags and possible a camping tent that might need replacing. Yet camping accessories play a big role in our ability to enjoy camping. Take for example a camping lantern. A good camping lantern can be the difference between feeling that you have a great site and feeling like it is a little on the dingy side.
The nice part about an LED camping lantern is you no longer need to carry fuel. In addition you can turn them on and off easily. Great for having kids around as they can turn it off and on. Well at least on!
There isn’t any doubt that building enjoying a fire is one of the things that make camping great. Many of us create recipes that we use over a fire. The food sometimes gets burned a little but that actually adds to the fun of camping. However, with kids that doesn’t always work. There are a couple of reasons for that.
Children have a lot smaller stomachs than adults so they get hungry faster. In addition they can be picky about what they eat. That is where camping stoves are handy. You can cook their meal and still savor the meal cooked over a fire for yourself. Peanut butter sandwiches only go so far.
In northern Minnesota we assume that the water is actually clean and think nothing of letting our children play in the lake or river. This means that they will consume a small amount of water and not get sick. That isn’t true everywhere. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautions when needing it for drinking water.
A Katadyn water filter can give the assurance that you need to drink the water from the stream you are camping by. Most public campgrounds have tested water that you can obtain for drinking. However, that isn’t true on hikes or in remote areas. It never hurts to play it safe.

Growing up in northern Minnesota meant spending many hours outside including many hours in a woods. I suspect that is one reason that I usually have a good sense of direction when I have a chance to be misplaced. However, there been times when I was positive that the sun was going to set in the east tonight. That demonstrates the capability of your mind reasoning things out even in the face of logic.
That is one reason I believe everyone should carry a compass and I suggest a digital compass. A digital is easier for the younger generation to read and understand. A Brunton compass has alarms and a gives the temperature. The outdoor the temperature is critical when it isn’t summertime. The reason is if it cooling off faster that it should you might be subject to a storm you aren’t aware of. Time to head home.
