This is the time of the year we hear of people getting lost. They do while hiking, blue berry picking or any other time that they are out in unfamiliar territory. A digital compass can help reduce the risk of getting lost. Why a digital compass? First of all it is easy to use and read. People today are used to digital items and relate well to them. In addition a Brunton compass also gives time and temperature along with alarms. That way if the temperature starts to drop it can be a sign that you should head back sooner.
However, merely taking a digital compass along will do little good if you don’t know what direction you need to go. Sounds simple but many a hunter or blue berry picker left the car not realizing what direction they went. Kind of hard to find your way back that way.
There was an article on CNN today that said people who sit during their leisure time don’t live as long as those who are more active. According to this article just standing up makes a big difference in how long you live. As parents and grandparents we owe our children the leadership in encouraging an active lifestyle. One way we can do this is with the toys we buy.
A Brunton compass wouldn’t normally be considered a toy. However, getting your children to like hiking can lead them to a desire to go for walks and appreciate nature when they get older. A digital compass helps keep their mind occupied while going that. Just don’t let them get eaten by mosquitoes while hiking. That would ruin the effort.
We live in a digital world and we no longer feel have the capability of determining direction just by looking at the sun. That assumes that we can even see the sun when the subject of direction is important. One complicating issue is the sun doesn’t just set in the west but the time of the year is important in determining the direction it sets in.
A digital compass can make a big difference for bikers, hikers or anyone who has a need to prevent getting misplaced. Just be sure you know what direction you need to go and not have to guess.
Living in northern Minnesota every once in a while I hear of someone getting lost or at last misplaced for a while. Granted normally it only takes a relatively short period of time before they are found. Of course the determination of a short period of time does depend on whose opinion you ask as it is different depending on if you are the misplaced person or just someone who heard about it later. Does a Brunton compass prevent you from getting lost? Of course not, you need to use it properly and with a little common sense.
The reason I say it won’t prevent you from getting lost is first you need to know what direction you actually went into the woods and what is the best direction to get out. It isn’t always best to just think in term of going back. Also what landmarks can assist you in find your way? That is one reason I think children who learn about direction do better later in life.
For those who have followed my blogs and articles you will understand that I believe in family times and family togetherness. How does this relate to camping? Is taking your kids camping enough family togetherness? There are many way s to do promote family togetherness but one way I know of is to take them on a hike and have them tell you the direction they are going and how to get back home. I don’t mean just follow the trail but where is the campsite if you were to go thru the woods.
A Brunton compass can be a great help. A Brunton compass is a digital compass and they can use it to tell directions. Just be sure they take the first reading before you go into the woods or the compass won’t help a lot.
I love having a compass in the car to tell me the direction I am going. I suspect that over the life of the car I have saved enough in gas from going the wrong direction or even confirming the direction I am going to justify the expense. In addition I have found better routes after realizing that the normal route did some backtracking.
A Brunton compass does the same thing for a hiker, biker or canoeist. Even if you are going the right direction the conformation is worth the cost of the compass. Keep in mind that the best thing to prevent getting lost is common sense. However, a good compass will assist you.
There can be a misconception that if you get lost and have a compass all you have to do is look at it and it will tell you which direction to go. Why is that a false assumption and if so what good is a compass? The reason it is false is you have to know what direction you want to go. For example would you get on the elevator without knowing what floor you are on and what floor you need to go to? If you did would you expect to get back to where you started from?
While a Brunton compass can be useful it finding your way home it needs to be used before you start and along with some common sense. In addition always know what landmarks are around and where. Remember they won’t move no matter how much you are convinced they did.
Recently I got back from an all day bike ride and I ran across some hikers. They had gotten misplaced for a few hours and not only did they have a much longer that planned hike but missed a panned event with some friends. The problem was they came to a fork in the trail and weren’t sure which trail to take. After they got back and had a chance to review their journey on a map they realized that they were going a different direction then they thought and thus took the wrong fork.
That is where a Brunton compass comes in. Take it on your hike and verify your directions. I do a lot of biking and that is always an issue in deciding which the right direction to go is. Only a small difference if direction can be big in getting home on time. l
